About Me

I’m Leigh Apperley of LAVA Psychological Services. I obtained my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology in 2018 and have been registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists as a Registered Provisional Psychologist and practicing in Red Deer and area since January 2019. I enjoy meeting new clients and building an understanding of their concerns and goals for the future. I am a believer that everyone can benefit from therapy at some point in their life. My interests are in areas of trauma, mental health, grief, and interpersonal difficulties. I use trauma focused, narrative, emotion-focused, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and EMDR therapy approaches to support clients.

What is a Provisional Psychologist?

All psychologists in Alberta are affiliated with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). When initially registered psychologists are given a period of time to complete supervised hours and two exams. During this time, psychologists are considered Provisional. This should not impact quality of service or ability to submit receipts to your service provider. If it does discuss with your Provisional Psychologist.

Does everything I say in session stay confidential?

Confidentiality is an ongoing process in any therapeutic relationship. The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) sets practice and ethical guidelines for all Psychologists and Provisional Psychologists . One guideline ensures confidentiality of clients information, sessions, and client information, etc. In your first session your therapist should discuss confidentiality and its limits.
